The University of the Philippines was established on June 18, 1908, by an act of the First Philippine Legislature. Act No. 1870, also known as the "University Act," established the University's role as a provider of advanced education in literature, philosophy, science, and the arts, as well as the administration of professional and technical training. It is the University of the Philippines System's fourth oldest and largest constituent university in terms of degree-granting academic divisions, student population, faculty, and library services.
